The sun-baked expanse of the Sonoran Desert is a daily crucible for Cora Martinez. As a park ranger, her duty is a constant negotiation between offering sanctuary to the desperate and warning others of the lethal terrain. Her quiet patrols are shattered when a violent rupture in the sky deposits two figures from a distant conflict onto the sand. These are not refugees, but opposing combatants from an alien civil war, their battle now transplanted to this arid ground.
