Meanwhile, industrialist John Hawksmore has identified a different threat: a servant girl whose discovery of that same volume has destabilized his household. As Aubrey navigates the social constraints of 1891, her personal disquiet mirrors the era's own fractures. The paths of the time-agent, the tycoon, and the maid are converging around a single, misplaced object. The city's cobblestones are slick with evening rain.
