After his release from Belle Reve, Christopher Smith attempts to establish a conventional career in Metropolis. His efforts are met with widespread derision from both the city's heroes and its criminal element. A routine intervention against a terrorist cell results in an unexpected acquisition: a clumsy, four-legged companion that offers him a rare, uncomplicated affection. This fragile domesticity is shattered when a rival operative abducts the animal. The perpetrator, a notoriously volatile super-powered criminal, presents Smith with a proposition involving the theft of highly classified genetic material.
