The roads of feudal Japan are traveled by Sarobei, a disgraced messenger whose reputation for cowardice precedes him. His path forces encounters with the era’s lords and warriors, as well as spectral guides who are remnants of greater conflicts. This journey is increasingly haunted by entities from the old stories: sly kitsune and true demons whose malevolence makes human politics seem trivial. Sarobei’s quest for a personal reckoning unfolds against a landscape where history and myth share the same soil, each demanding a different kind of courage. The air grows thick with the scent of pine and old magic.
