While Ester is away, Pat struggles to manage his temper with his children, his frustration manifesting in ways that frighten them and deepen his own guilt. His friend Mathieu, another stay-at-home father, offers advice that only highlights their shared sense of professional inadequacy. Their children’s behavior reflects unresolved wounds from their own pasts. This tension is compounded by a package from Pat’s estranged father, containing wartime memorabilia from Vietnam. The contents trigger an obsessive investigation into his family’s history. With support from Mathieu and Pat’s mother, he confronts the source of their intergenerational trauma. The process strains his family to its limit before a difficult clarity is found.
